Ernest Pignon-Ernest in Avignon
Ernest Pignon-Ernest and his exhibition “Interventions” browse works of the artist produced from 1966 to 2019 ! It will invest the Great Chapel of the Palace of the Popes from June 29, 2019 until February 29, 2020.
The exhibition, produced by the City of Avignon and Avignon Tourism, called “Ecce Homo” traces the artist’s career and explains his artistic, intellectual and political approach for more than 60 years, through a panel of works from the Lelong & Co gallery in Paris, private collections, the Montauban museum and photographic evidence of his prolific work on the streets of the world.
Nearly 400 works – photographs, collages, charcoal and black ink drawings, documents – will be exhibited, evoking his interventions from 1966 to the present day.
Ernest Pignon-Ernest is considered as the initiator of the “street art” by the large-scale images with black chalk, with charcoal, the collages that he carries out in the streets of the cities and on the walls of the cities since about 60 years.
He travels, feeds on encounters, makes sets for the theater, develops magazines, makes portraits, posters, collages … thousands of works, always in a spirit of political and social commitment, as a defender of major causes, as guardian of memory and collective history.
