2021 : what to do this Autumn in Avignon ?

This is a pleasant way to discover Avignon and one of its gardens !

50 years after his death, the Maison Jean Vilar is devoting an open-air photographic exhibition to the man who gave life to the Festival d’Avignon and the Théâtre National Populaire : Jean Vilar himself !

Côté Jardin offers a free walk, a journey to discover about thirty singular photographs, in large formats, in the Jardin des Doms, this extraordinary garden adjoining the Palais des Papes, marvellously located at the top of the city and from which the visitor can admire Villeneuve les Avignon, the Tour Philippe le Bel, the Pont Saint Bénézet, known as Pont d’Avignon.

Thanks to a meticulous research work within the marvellous and rich archives of the Maison Jean Vilar, these images express the indefectible link between theatre and the July Festival within the City of Avignon. They are signed by Agnès Varda and all the other photographers who have followed the adventure of the Théâtre National Populaire.

Côté Jardin, in the shadow of memories, consecrates the unforgettable presence of those who have created another way of making and sharing theatre: Jean Vilar and the entire beautiful troupe of the TNP, Gérard Philipe, Maria Casarès, Philippe Noiret, Silvia Monfort, Daniel Gélin… and many others.
